The Precision Farming Development Centre was established through National Commettee on Plasticulture Applications in Horticulture (NACPAH) at Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH) Lucknow, during 2001 - 2002.

NCPAH has been providing support for the overall development of plasticulture in the country. The success of any programme primarily depends upon the refinement of technology in the regionally differentiated manner as per the local needs. Therefore, to have technological refinement and capacity building, programmes were initiated through network of Plastic Development Centres (PDCs) established in different agro-climatic regions in March 1981. Considering the importance of these centres and its focus, they were redesignated as Precision Farming Development Centres (PFDCs) with effect from 2001 – 2002. The PFDCs presently exist in 17 locations in the country which are mostly in the SAUs, ICAR Institutes and IIT, Kharagpur.

The principal activities of Lucknow PFDC are: technology development and refinement in hi tech horticulture, technology dissemination and validation, survey of drip irrigation, plastic mulching and greenhouse technology for adoption and farmers' reaction in the areas of PFDC jurisdictions and modification, if any, in technology for better adoptability, development of package of practices for cultivation of mango, guava and aonla organizing seminar, workshop and training programmes for state officials and farmers' for the promotion of the technology. The technologies perfected and disseminated from this centre are: rapid multiplication of guava, mango and aonla; year round utilization of greenhouse for propagation of horticultural crops; drip irrigation, moisture conservation through mulching for enhancing yield and quality of produce; fertigation; high density planting and canopy management; meadow orcharding in guava and rejuvenation of old and senile orchards of guava and aonla.

It is located at a distance of 25 kms from Lucknow on Hardoi Road at the experimental farm of Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, Rehmankhera in an area of 15 ha including research and demonstration plots.
